Can You Stop The Damn Thing?
The Stories Rule Press group of authors are a cooperative and thoughtful bunch.
A year or more ago, Tracy Cooper-Posey, who is the publisher at SRP, sent out a call for a fantasy anthology, part of the short-lived Stories Rule Presents series of genre fiction anthologies. The fantasy anthology was going to be called The Wizard Must Be Stopped!, and SRP commissioned artwork and a cover for the anthology.
But the anthology didn’t go ahead–not enough quality submissions were received, and Tracy shut down the anthology rather than put out a collection of sub-par stories.
But that left a fabulous cover lying around, unused. So she offered it to me. “Can you make something of this?” she asked. “It’s yours if you want it.”
Some of the most creative ideas come out of severely restrained parameters. I studied the cover for a while, and couldn’t really figure out a story to go with it. But my subconscious had been primed.
A few days later, I was lying awake in the middle of the night. I lay awake in the middle of the night more frequently than I would like…but I get a lot of good ideas post-midnight, so it might not be such a bad thing, in the long term.
On this particular night, I got the glimmer of an idea for a story that would go with the cover I’d been given. I scribbled it down in the notebook that lives next to my pillow and promptly fell asleep again.
The next day I sat down to plot and write the story.
Because the story is part of the Magorian & Jones series, the cover was adjusted slightly to show that, but because the story is a novelette — a side story — I didn’t insist upon it looking the same as the novels in the series.
And so, The Wizard Must be Stopped! was released early this morning.
Magorian, the world’s first modern wizard, tackles a wayward entity in New York.
Magorian is offered a small fortune by billionaire property owner and media magnate, Navin Kiraly, to deal with a New York apartment building turned feral.
The apartment building Magorian investigates shows every sign of being haunted, with strange phenomena turning it into a potential death trap. This is way outside Magorian’s field of expertise, but he must solve the riddles the building presents or be publicly declared a phony by Kiraly’s media empire….
