Why Are We Talking About Email?
Spam email accounts are a fact of life for authors. Another fact (and this one is entirely understandable) is that many readers join an author’s email list to grab a free book and then never open another email.
What you might not realize is that authors pay for every subscriber on their list, whether those subscribers open their emails or not.
Worse, unopened emails can harm the sender’s email reputation. This is why authors regularly “spring clean” their email lists by reaching out to subscribers who haven’t opened emails in a while to ask if they’d still like to receive messages. Subscribers who don’t respond are removed—like clearing out clutter from a closet.
I recently cleaned my email list and received responses from readers saying they just didn’t notice my emails in the crush of the hundreds (sometimes thousands) they receive daily. That inspired me to start this new series: Inbox Reboot, a guide to managing your email effectively.
Managing email isn’t just for office admins anymore—it’s a survival skill for the modern world.
Part 1: Who Cares About Email Management?
If I told you that handling email efficiently is no longer optional, you’d probably have one of two reactions:
- The Satisfied Nod. You’re on top of your email game. Your inbox is a tool for good news, communication, and organization.
- The Guilty Flinch. Your inbox is a digital jungle. Old emails lurk in its depths, and opening it feels like a risky expedition. You might even avoid it altogether, letting unread emails pile up like forgotten treasures—or ticking time bombs.
If you fall into the second camp, you’re not alone. Many people shrug off email organization, thinking:
- “Why does it matter how I handle my email?”
- “Email’s just not that important.”
- “That’s for office workers, not me.”
- “I don’t have time to be organized!”
But here’s the thing: the way you manage your email doesn’t just affect you. It affects your friends, family, and anyone else trying to reach you. It impacts your opportunities, your peace of mind, and even how others perceive you.
Why Should You Care?
Think about what your email inbox is today. It’s not just a place for messages from friends and family. You also receive:
- Bills and Statements: Utility companies, subscriptions, and government correspondence.
- Receipts and Records: For taxes, warranties, and purchases.
- Newsletters and Updates: From authors (like me!), organizations, and interests you follow.
- Social Notifications: Event invites, group updates, or urgent reminders.
- Opportunities: Exclusive offers, limited-time deals, and freebies.
And that’s just the beginning. In a world where email is central to almost every aspect of life, letting your inbox run wild can cost you—literally.
What Happens When Email Overwhelms You?
Ignoring email management can lead to missed opportunities and more:
- Lost Freebies:
Many authors (myself included!) send free books or other bonuses via email. If your inbox is chaotic, it’s easy to miss these. Worse, if you don’t confirm subscriptions or let emails bounce back, you could miss out entirely. - Missed Deadlines:
Special offers, discounts, and even urgent notices often land in your email. If you don’t check regularly, those opportunities disappear. - Risk of Real Consequences:
Government agencies, banks, and businesses use email for critical communications. Ignoring emails can lead to late fees, missed deadlines, or worse. - Damaged Relationships:
Overwhelmed inboxes mean you could overlook personal messages, like a note from an old friend or an invitation from family. - Perception Problems:
Whether we like it or not, email management reflects on our reliability. Missed messages can make you seem flaky, both personally and professionally.
